How the creature of the day is drawn
Nothing about it is hand-picked, and none of it is plain chance either. Pure randomness would happily serve five mammals in a row, so the draw runs on four rules — the same four every morning, over the same animal library.

A head from one animal, a tail from another, then eyes, legs, wings and horns — filled from a library of more than 3,000 species. A few slots stay empty on purpose, so the creature keeps a silhouette instead of becoming a pile of spare parts.

Six themes — cute, creepy, elegant, monster, alien, mythical — cycle every six days; five art styles cycle every five. The lengths share no factors, so a month goes by before the same pairing comes round.

Checked against the days before it
Share three or more species with a recent creature and the draw is thrown away and run again, up to eight times. It is why the archive rarely shows the same animal twice in a week.

Weird enough to be worth a look
The weirdness dial stays in the upper half of its range. A barely-mixed hybrid reads as a photo of an ordinary animal, and an ordinary animal is not why anyone opens a creature of the day.

Creature of the day questions
When does the creature of the day change?
Once a day, on a UTC clock. This page always shows the newest creature that has finished rendering, so if a morning's render is late you see yesterday's until the new one lands rather than an empty frame.
Are the animals in it real?
The parts are, the creature is not. Every body part is taken from a real species in the site's 3,000-animal library — the head from one animal, the tail from another — and the list of species behind today's creature is printed under the picture with a link to each one.
Can I keep a day I missed?
Yes. Nothing expires: every day keeps a permanent page, and the hollow circles in your last-seven-days strip and the hollow squares in the month calendar link straight to the days you have not kept yet. Open one and stamp it and it fills in.
Do I need an account to keep creatures?
Yes. You can browse and remix every daily creature without an account, but stamping one requires Google sign-in. Kept creatures are attached to your account and appear in My Creatures across devices instead of being stored as a browser-only collection.
Can I change today's creature?
Not the daily one — that is the same for everybody, which is what makes it worth sharing. But it carries its full recipe, so 'Remix this creature' loads every part into the hybrid animal generator, where you can swap anything and render your own version.
How is the daily creature picked?
By a seeded draw, not by pure chance. Eight to eleven body parts are filled from the animal library, the theme rotates on a six-day cycle and the art style on a five-day one, and a draw that shares three or more species with a recent day is thrown out and redrawn — up to eight attempts — so no two mornings in a row look alike.
