What does the random fish generator choose from?
It draws from 349 real fish. Each one is assigned to a useful exploration station—reef, freshwater, coast and shelf, open ocean, or deep water—based on a species-specific ecology source (FishBase, NOAA or the species' Wikipedia article) rather than the broad placeholder habitat field in the larger library.
How many fish are in the pool?
349 species right now, spread across five water stations. Every fish in the rotation has an openly licensed photo, an adaptation note and a linked ecology source; fossil species and duplicate names were filtered out during the build.
Can I generate only saltwater or only freshwater fish?
Yes. Pick the Freshwater station for rivers, lakes and caves, or any of the four marine stations for saltwater species. The Any water option draws from the entire pool at once.
Does a fish stay in only one water zone?
Not necessarily. Fish move with age, season, food and reproduction, and some cross coastal and open water. The station is the most useful entry point for this generator, not a claim that the species lives at one exact depth for its entire life.
Are sharks and rays fish?
Yes. Sharks, rays and chimaeras are cartilaginous fish, while animals such as clownfish and coelacanths are bony fish. This generator includes both groups and keeps the scientific name visible on every result.
Are the fish images generated by AI?
No. Result photographs come from Wikimedia Commons and retain the photographer, open licence and original image link. The separate remix action uses a real fish only as inspiration for an imaginary hybrid.
Can I use this for class or drawing prompts?
Yes. Pick a water station, reveal a fish and use its body plan or adaptation as a discussion or drawing prompt. For research, follow the ecology source on the result card and consult more than one authoritative reference.
Is the random fish generator free?
Yes—free, unlimited and no account needed. If you remix a fish into a hybrid creature, you can also turn that creature into an AI image; a free daily image is included and heavier use is where the site's optional Pro plan comes in.
