Start with the parents
Hybrid animals have parents from two different but related species or populations. The cross only works when their biology is compatible enough for an embryo to develop. That is why a lion and tiger can produce offspring, while two unrelated animals that merely look similar cannot.
Names can hide important detail. A liger and a tigon use the same two species, but the sex of each parent is reversed. A mule and a hinny follow the same pattern with horses and donkeys. Parent direction, chromosome pairing and early development can change size, fertility and other traits.

Why fertility differs
63
A horse contributes one set based on 64 chromosomes and a donkey one based on 62. The mule usually has 63, an uneven number that makes balanced egg or sperm formation extremely difficult. Rare exceptions do not change the general rule.
F1
F1 means the first generation from the two parent groups. Savannah and Bengal cat males are often sterile in early generations, while fertility can return after repeated breeding with domestic cats. A breed name alone does not state ancestry.
DNA
Color, size and shape can suggest mixed ancestry, but unusual individuals also occur within species. Genetic evidence confirmed the narluga skull and wild grolar bears. Responsible identification starts with records or testing, not a viral caption.
Context before novelty
A wild hybrid can reveal changing contact between populations. An agricultural hybrid may have a long working history. A captive novelty cross may instead raise questions about health, housing and the reason it was produced. Those situations should not be collapsed into one dramatic list.
Conservation decisions are equally specific. Hybridization can add genetic variation, but it can also threaten a small population's distinct lineage. Scientists look at ancestry, population size, habitat, repeated backcrossing and human influence before deciding whether a hybrid is a curiosity, a management concern or part of ongoing evolution.
